The core objective of the 3DLife project is to create sufficient momentum by helping an existing large number of researchers and resources to integrate realistic, efficient and, to some extent, autonomic media communication and interaction over the Internet, and thus influence the long-term European research agenda in several important aspects of Media Internet. 3DLife will integrate leading European research groups to create a long-term integration of critical mass for innovation of currently fragmented research addressing media Internet. The main objective of the NoE are: -To foster the creation of sustainable relationships between existing national research groups and to start development of a Virtual Centre of Excellence in the field. -To create sufficient momentum by integrating an existing large number of researchers and resources and to push forward new paradigms on 3D media communication and interaction over the Internet. -To influence European and world research agenda in several key aspects of 3D Media Internet. 3DLife aims at supporting the creation of a Virtual Center of Excellence in Media Internet and conduct cooperative research in the field. To achieve this goal 3DLife will integrate complementary expertise, enable resource optimization and sharing, and foster research in Media Internet technology. 3DLife addresses wide, Pan-European integration through dedicated activities aiming at sharing laboratory facilities, technological developments and resources, including people. To ensure this wide cooperation and to guarantee that the targeted integrative research profits from, feeds back into, and fosters links with research groups of the 12 new EU member states, a Pan-European Integration Board will be part of the project. The technical and integration goals will be influenced by two other external and independent Boards of Industrial and Scientific Advisors. It is widely argued that the next generation of Media Internet services will become the cornerstone of Information Society in our century. Its impact on the entertainment industry is already clear. However its impact is expected to be much broader changing the way society delivers key services such as health care, learning and commerce. Since the 3DLife project comprehensively addresses several challenges of Media Internet, its impact is expected to be vast in several aspects of modern life including, industrial, academic and societal.
MIRALab’s main contribution is to study new levels of realism in virtual humans by exploiting the capacities that commodity graphics hardware provides. As a result MIRALab will develop modules for an optimized high quality rendering results and realistic physical simulation of garments. MIRALab’s main contribution consists of the following sub-activities. Realistic human rendering: Development of efficient rendering methods for realistic human models. GPU-optimized real-time virtual clothing: Simulation of 3D garments for dressed virtual humans. The inclusion of virtual garments adds a new level of realism to the virtual humans. This activity will focus on the optimization of existing garment simulation methods through the exploitation of the computational capacities of modern graphics hardware. Gesture classification and object recognition: This activity aims to provide recognition of scenario specific gestures, including an evaluation of correctness compared to the expert’s ideal, allowing for corrective and educative feedback. Gestures will be characterized by values of a set of features extracted from the low-level data, e.g., tracked positions, kinematics.
