ISIS

"Intelligent Scalability for Interoperable Services"

Period: September 2002 - February 2004
Type: European Research
Status: Completed
Website: isis.rd.francetelecom.com

Overview

The goal of ISIS is to design, implement and validate a multimedia framework that allows for audio-visual content to be created once and adapted to a wide range of service scenarios by customization to different transport characteristics and end device capabilities as well as personalization to end-user preferences. The transport mechanisms envisaged are those of the fixed, wireless and mobile Internets. The end-devices include the variety of personal computers and handheld terminals connected to these networks. To this end, the following objectives will be pursued: 1-Development of tools for coding, managing, delivering & playing back scalable audio, video & graphics contents; 2-Integration in a consistent end-to-end production, delivery and consumption chain; 3-Validation & demonstration of scalability functionality through prototype application.

MIRALab's contribution

It is MIRALab’s intention to provide research and development in the area of scalable avatars for transmission and rendering (in 2D and 3D) for portable devices. This R&D work will involve the definition and specification (including a range of methodologies) of scalability, in the context of avatars, and the development from prototype models to final usable standards and working applications. In addition, MIRALab will provide dissemination through its already established links with the scientific community.

MIRALab’s extensive experience in Virtual Humans (often referred to as avatars), stemming form their pioneering work in the late 1980’s, will provide the basis for their research work within this project.
