FIVE – “Framework for Immersive Virtual Environments. European ESPRIT Working Group”

Period: February 1994 - January 1997 Type: Other Research Status: Completed

Overview

The main objective of the FIVE Working Group is to lay the groundwork for future focussed projects in the area of immersive virtual environments. This objective will be achieved through a series of workshops and meetings of the partners, some devoted to specific topics within the field, and others more broadly aiming at dissemination and integration of work in progress at the various sites encompassed by the Group. The Group’s expertise includes visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic systems and corresponding knowledge of perceptual psychology, neuro-science, computer software, parallel and concurrent systems, and interactive computer graphics. The majority of the partners are currently working in the field of virtual reality, from within their differing disciplines and perspectives. Yet an integration of these areas of knowledge is a paramount requirement for the successful understanding and application of virtual reality to real world problems.
